An Ultrasonic Thickness Gauge (UTG) is a precision instrument used to measure the thickness of a material or object using ultrasonic sound waves. It works by transmitting high-frequency sound pulses into a material through a probe (transducer). The sound waves reflect back from the opposite surface, and the device calculates the thickness based on the time taken for the echoes to return. This method allows non-destructive measurement of thickness in metals, plastics, ceramics, glass, composites, and other solid materials—even when only one side is accessible.

It is commonly used in industries such as construction, manufacturing, shipbuilding, pipelines, and aerospace to detect corrosion, wear, or erosion in components.

Properties:-

  • Non-destructive testing (NDT): Measures material thickness without damaging the test object.
  • High accuracy: Provides precise thickness measurements (often up to ±0.01 mm).
  • Wide measuring range: Can measure thin to very thick materials depending on the model.
  • Digital display: Clear, real-time readout of measurements.
  • Portable and lightweight: Easy to carry for on-site inspections.
  • Single-side access: Requires access to only one side of the material.
  • Multiple material capability: Can be calibrated for metals, plastics, glass, ceramics, and composites.
  • Data storage and transfer (in advanced models): Stores measurement results with options for USB or Bluetooth transfer.
  • Corrosion detection mode: Some models can differentiate between base metal and corroded layers.
  • Automatic calibration: Ensures accurate results with standard test blocks.
  • Backlight display: For easy reading in low-light environments.
